Home Diaries | Window Seat
This week on the home diaries we're getting a little bit crafty. In our conservatory/dining room we've got a built in unit storage unit and we've been trying to work out what to do on top of this unit. We decided that instead of using it as another surface space we'd like to turn it into another sitting area for when we're using the dining room. During the winter months this room has been quite cold so in an attempt to soften it and warm it up a little with wanted to bring some fabric into the room. We'd still like to add blinds and ideally a little electric fire heater into the fire place, but little by little!
We took off everything that we were storing on top of this unit and turned it into a little window seat. I had a look online to find some tutorials on how to best make this, and it was really easy! I'll link those below. The pictures I've taken are fairly self explanatory, but I'll explain a little along the way.
Our first stop was to Dunelm to choose some fabric to cover the cushion. We decided to go for something very simple to match the grey in the rest of the room.
I measured up the space to find the size of wood that we would need. We just bought a sheet of plywood which they cut to size for us in B&Q and I bought some 3" foam and some wadding online from Amazon. I then used a wall stapler, a Stanley knife and some staples (although it took a couple of trips to B&Q to find the right size... and then the help of a hammer to make sure they were all the way in!)
I cut the wadding to size, folded it over, then stapled it down. I did the same with the fabric, pulling it tight so there were no creases or bumps.
I folded the ends as though wrapping up a present, although it was a little tricky to make sure the ends were smooth and that there was not excess fabric. I tucked the corners down, folded it up, then stapled it down, again using a hammer to make sure the staples were in all the way.
And that's it! A really simple addition but it has really changed this room.
I think I'll do a separate post on the finished room, as we have just finished decorating it. It feels so nice to walk into a finished space!
Thankyou for reading xx
